No. 1 DJ – 2013
So, this is the first blog I’m writing about DJ Mag’s top 100 DJ’s and who better to start off than today’s current number one DJ in the world! His name is Armin Van Buuren a superstar Dutch DJ born on Christmas day (25th December) 1976. He is known for producing Trance music, but he keeps up with current sounds and has recently released ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ ft Trevor Guthrie which was a top ten hit in the UK and the rest of Europe. This isn’t the first time he has held the number one DJ spot and also picked up the number one vote between 2007 and 2010. He hosts his own radio show called ‘A State of Trance’, which is listened to in 26 countries all over the world. It could actually be the most listened to show in the world!
Armin Van Buuren began life back on Christmas day 1976 in Leiden, Holland. He was at the tender age of 14 when started to produce music, inspired by French born Jean Michel Jarre. Armin started playing in Clubs a few days a week where is sets would go on for more than six hours. Whilst all the DJ’ing was going on he studied Law at university, however, this was halted for a while whilst his music career started to boom.
Early in Career
His first big track was “Blue Fear” when he was just 19 years old, which is very young for producing good music at a high level. His first track was very popular Euro-dance tune and entered the UK charts. The Dutch producer then went on to make “Communication which was a smash hit in Ibiza during the summer of 1999.
Armin’s DJ career began in club Nexus in the town of Leiden, where his DJ sets were up to six hours or more. During the summer he played most days during the week, which gained Armin valuable experience as a DJ. Remember being a DJ is not the same as being a producer and the two are different in many ways. Producer Dave Lewis opened the gates for Van Buuren as a DJ in the UK and the UAS and from then on his career spiraled upwards! By 2001 he was entered at position 27 in DJ mag top 100 DJ list. If there is a big festival going on, or a slot at some of the world’s most famous clubs, you can be sure Armin has played there, or will be there! He then went on to do a 12.5 hour set in Holland
During the start of 1999 he launched his own record label named Armind in conjunction with United Recordings. His first tune to be released was “One” was well accepted and the 2ND tune “Touch Me” was signed to Ministry Of Sound before release.
